As we were getting settled in our new home and enjoying a rare, quiet, joyful moment, we heard some scratching beneath a floorboard. We decided to ignore it, but the next day went into our kitchen to find the remnants of 20 energy balls strewn across the floor. A colony of rats had moved in with us… It felt like we’d been dealt a fairly sizeable number of challenges to cope with at that point, then, just to add to them, one evening when we were back at the house picking up some clothes, Austin trotted out to the patio through a door left open by the builders, and ate a large amount of the rat poison. We had to rush him to an emergency vet and as we sat there watching him have his stomach pumped, we cried and laughed at the same time wondering what had happened to us!

Stress is a crazy thing and something that Matt has always seemingly taken in his stride. Clearly it all had got too much though and, one day, while walking from the office to get himself some lunch, Matt collapsed on the street and was rushed to A & E. He couldn’t hold himself up, could barely speak and was projectile vomiting. After five hours or so he started to feel better but was left with dizziness, exhaustion and tinnitus. The doctors thought he had had a problem with his inner ear and sent him home on strict bedrest.

In retrospect, it was pretty obvious that we had been hurtling towards burnout. That summer had been extremely intense and it hadn’t been helped by the fact that we had been pushing ourselves so hard before everything unravelled. In 18 months, we’d cancelled five attempts at a holiday, spent a lot of our honeymoon answering work emails and had totally lost sight of the concept of a weekend or a night off. We’d been so excited and challenged by Deliciously Ella that it had become all-consuming. Something clicked and as we lay in bed that night, just feeling so grateful that Matt was okay, we both knew that something had to change. We cancelled everything in our diaries for the following week, turned our phones off, left the team in charge and went to Greece. Throughout six heavenly days we reconnected with ourselves and with each other, and made a real commitment to assess the way we were living and to find a better sense of balance. I’d started Deliciously Ella back in 2012 to help me regain my health and I needed it again now to give us both a push back in the right direction.

From the day we arrived back from our trip, we started leaving our computers in the office (almost) every night, made an effort to book date nights, made time for our friends and got back into the routine of sitting down to a home-cooked meal in the evening. I also went back to my daily yoga practice, which I hadn’t made time for in too long.
